ACM Panels vs. Traditional Metal Siding: What’s the Difference?

Metal can create dramatically different building exteriors depending on the panel system behind the finished surface. Two options that can appear on residential, commercial, and architectural projects are aluminum composite material panels and traditional formed metal siding.

Both use metal as a prominent exterior material, but they are built differently and produce different architectural results.

Understanding that distinction makes it easier to choose a wall system based on the building rather than appearance alone.

What Are ACM Panels?

Aluminum composite material, commonly called ACM, is constructed with two aluminum sheets bonded to a core. This construction creates a rigid panel with a smooth, flat surface. ALUCOBOND, one of the ACM manufacturers offered by Retro Custom Metals, describes its ALUCOBOND PLUS product as two aluminum sheets bonded to a solid fire-retardant core.

The Metal Construction Association notes that ACM was originally developed to provide an appearance similar to metal plate while reducing weight and making the material easier to fabricate.

That combination of flatness, rigidity, and fabrication flexibility is one reason ACM frequently appears on architectural façades.

How Is Traditional Metal Siding Different?

Traditional architectural metal siding is generally formed from a single sheet of metal rather than aluminum skins bonded around a core.

The metal is roll-formed or bent into a profile that gives the wall its shape. Depending on the system, that could create vertical seams, ribs, battens, reveals, or other repeating patterns.

ACM Creates a Flatter Architectural Surface

One of the clearest differences is visual.

ACM is commonly used when the design calls for large, smooth panel faces with defined joints between them. The rigidity of the composite construction helps create the flat appearance associated with architectural façades.

Traditional metal siding has more visible profiling. Vertical seams, ribs, battens, and other formed details become part of the design rather than disappearing into the background.

Neither approach is inherently better. They create different architectural languages.

A project designed around crisp rectangular sections and broad areas of flat metal may point toward ACM. A building that calls for continuous vertical lines or a more pronounced panel profile may be better suited to formed metal siding.

The Fabrication Process Is Different

ACM also gives fabricators flexibility to create architectural shapes and panel layouts.

Panels can be cut and routed before being folded into fabricated panel assemblies. CNC equipment can be used when projects require detailed dimensions or unusual geometry. ALUCOBOND documents architectural projects in which CNC fabrication was used to produce complex panel shapes for sloped and angled façades.

Formed metal siding follows a different production process. Sheet or coil metal is formed into the selected profile, allowing installers to create repeated runs of siding across the building.

Traditional metal siding works across residential, commercial, agricultural, and architectural projects. Depending on the profile, it can complement everything from a mountain home to a commercial building.

The building design should drive the selection.

Consider how large each wall section is, how visible the panel joints should be, whether the architect wants a flat or profiled surface, how the metal connects with surrounding materials, and what custom transitions the project requires.

Custom Details Matter With Either System

Choosing the main wall panel is only part of the exterior package.

Corners, windows, doors, parapets, transitions, roof connections, and changes between materials all create details that have to be addressed during fabrication and installation.

This becomes especially important on buildings that combine metal with stone, wood, stucco, glass, or other exterior finishes. Custom trim and flashing can help those different materials meet cleanly while supporting the intended wall assembly.

ACM or Metal Siding?

Start with the architecture.

Choose ACM when the project calls for a smooth, rigid panel surface, distinct panel geometry, and greater freedom to create fabricated façade sections.

Consider traditional formed metal siding when the design benefits from continuous panel runs and a visible profile such as board-and-batten, flush wall, or another formed pattern.

For projects that do not fit neatly into a standard system, custom fabrication can bridge the gap. Panel dimensions, trim, transitions, and other components can be produced around the building rather than forcing the building to work around stock pieces.

The result is a metal exterior designed as a complete system instead of a collection of individual panels.
